Years 5 & 6

Years 5 & 6

The final two years of Primary School are a transformative time for our girls. Years 5 and 6 are designed to set them up for success — academically, socially and emotionally.

From immersive outdoor education to cutting-edge technology and leadership opportunities, we blend academic rigour with a future-focused approach to wellbeing and personal growth. Our girls are empowered to explore new ideas, take on challenges and build the confidence they need to thrive in Senior Years.

Exciting News: A New Year 6 Classroom for 2026

Due to popular demand, we’re opening an additional Year 6 classroom in 2026 — and we’re inviting expressions of interest to join this vibrant cohort.

This is a unique opportunity to bring your daughter into MLC at a pivotal moment in her learning journey. Year 6 at MLC offers a smooth and supported transition into the Senior Years, so if you’re considering MLC for your daughter, now is the perfect time to connect.

Year 5: Exploration and Empowerment

In Year 5, technology becomes a key part of the learning experience. Each girl brings a Surface Go device to school, unlocking access to differentiated learning tools and creative presentation formats. Information Learning Technology supports individual expression and fosters digital confidence.

Our Wellbeing Curriculum — encompassing health, positive psychology and emotional literacy — brings balance to academic life. This is complemented by vibrant Physical Education and Outdoor and Environmental Education programs.

A highlight of the year is the three-day off-campus camp, where girls experience independence, adventure and team-building through canoeing, climbing, hiking and more. These activities nurture responsible risk-taking and personal growth.

The Year 5 Band Program invites every girl to learn a wind instrument of her choice, supported by expert tuition from our Music Department.

Year 6: Leadership and Transition

Year 6 is a year of growth, leadership and transition. Our girls begin to connect with Senior Years through events, assemblies and a symbolic guard of honour as they move into Marjorie Lyon House for Year 7.

The curriculum includes a deep dive into state and national governance, with democratic processes brought to life as girls nominate and elect their own leaders. Leadership roles such as House Captain and Student Representative Council member are open to all.

Outdoor education reaches new heights with a three-day camp where girls cook their own meals and tackle exciting challenges. The Albany Tour — a five-day experience — strengthens cohort bonds and builds lasting memories.

A highlight of the year is the Canberra Tour, where girls explore Australia’s capital, visit Parliament House, and deepen their understanding of civic processes and national identity. This immersive experience fosters independence, curiosity and a broader worldview.

Our Wellbeing Curriculum continues to support emotional resilience and self-awareness, ensuring girls are ready for the next stage of their journey.
