Years 8 & 9

YEARS 8 & 9

Years 8 and 9 are a pivotal part of your daughter’s Middle Years journey. These are years of consolidation, growing independence and exploration, with a strong pastoral framework that supports every student to feel known, valued and ready to embrace new challenges.

Across both year levels, our Pastoral Care team — including a dedicated Head of Year, Head of House, Mentor, Wellbeing Coordinator and College Psychologist — works closely with each girl to ensure she is seen, heard and supported. Our Health Centre is always also available to students.

LEARNING IN STAGES, NOT AGES

At MLC we understand that each girl learns at her own pace. Using the College’s Differentiation Framework, teachers design tiered learning experiences that allow students to progress through the curriculum in “stages, not ages”. This enables students to extend themselves, explore their interests and build confidence in their developing strengths. Opportunities for yearadvanced learning and compacted curriculum are available where appropriate, helping girls to discover their passions and take ownership of their learning goals.

YEAR 8: A YEAR OF EXPLORATION

Year 8 focuses on building upon the foundations established in Year 7, encouraging students to explore, connect and grow.

Wellbeing

Our Year 8 wellbeing program is designed around a series of themes — relationships with self, technology, others and school — each aligned with the College Values. Highlights include:

• Shaping Your Possibilities: a dedicated career education program led by the Head of Futures, introducing girls to their strengths, interests and emerging pathways.
• OEE Camp: a full-cohort camp designed to foster teamwork, resilience and connection.
• Healthy Technology Use: sessions with expert guest speakers who guide students in developing positive and balanced relationships with technology.
• Ongoing Study Skills: continued development of effective learning habits.
• Practical Wellbeing Sessions: student-chosen activities such as sport, meditation, colouring, games and more.

Co-Curricular and Service

Year 8 is a year to try everything. Students are encouraged to explore a wide range of co-curricular options and begin working towards community service goals, with the opportunity to accumulate hours towards College Colours.

Leadership Foundations

Students begin to build leadership confidence and, toward the end of the year, can express interest in future leadership roles.

YEAR 9: GROWING INDEPENDENCE AND FUTURE FOCUS

Year 9 is about honing skills, strengthening habits and preparing for the Senior Years.

WELLBEING

The wellbeing program continues to build on the Year 8 model, with:

• Wooleen Camp: a unique opportunity for personal growth and deepening peer connections.
• CRUX: a wellbeing program that supports students’ emotional, social and academic development.
• INSINE Program: a futures-focused program that helps students reflect on their strengths, aspirations and possible pathways.

Alongside wellbeing, students develop the practical habits that underpin success — nutrition, study routines, and healthy sleep patterns.

Leadership

Leadership is a hallmark of Year 9.

• Students may serve as Middle Years House Leaders, working alongside House Prefects, the Executive and Heads of House to plan and run House events.
• All Year 9 students complete Peer Support leadership training, with the opportunity to apply at the end of the year to become Year 10 Peer Support Leaders.

Learning and Choice

As students become more self-directed, they begin selecting courses for Year 10. While choice broadens as they move through the Senior Years, Year 9 provides an early opportunity to explore interests through elective options.

Co-Curricular and Service

Girls are encouraged to continue trying a wide range of activities while beginning to invest more deeply in the areas they are passionate about. Year 9 is also the first year students can begin working towards the Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze Award. Many students aim to complete 40 hours of service to earn a Values Half Colour.
